our founder

As the founder of Yoga Behind Bars, I believe that yoga offers a positive and effective way to create lasting change in inmates. Through guided movement, the study of breath and the practice of meditation, yoga helps bring harmony to the body and mind. Our organization believes that punishment and incarceration alone does not effectively re-route negative behavior. It is the mission of Yoga Behind Bars to teach inmates skills for deepening their capacity for self awareness, inner growth, and social responsibility.

The single transformation of one inmate causes a positive ripple into society. Ultimately, we are all innately capable and worthy of experiencing freedom, and we all deserve the opportunity to create peace within ourselves. It is the goal of Yoga Behind Bars to foster deeper self-awareness amongst inmates, so that each may not only lift their own veil of suffering, but also no longer be the source of suffering in others.
